Aux intersections de certaines rues d'Oakland, en Californie, les aveugles sont guidés par des signaux sonores stridents qui indiquent quand le feu est vert et quand il est rouge. L'intention est bonne mais les faibles différences de tonalité peuvent entraîner des confusions. De l'autre côté de la baie, à San Francisco ils commencent à bénéficier d'un système à la fois plus discret, plus sophistiqué et plus efficace qui leur indique quand ils peuvent se lancer sur la chaussée.
