New Alta Vista Gets Thumbs Down
The new site claims to have a bigger index and to supply more relevant results to searchers, but users say this isn't true. To demonstrate the age of the database AltaVista is using, users point out that a search for "Payne Stewart air crash" does not return any searches relevant to the tragic death of the golfer, which occurred just last week. There are various complaints being aired at Search Engine Forums, ranging from pages missing from the AltaVista index, to AltaVista employees not returning inquiries, to the CEO changing his e-mail to avoid complaints. Investors who normally use the Internet to find out which stocks are hot are now tracking leads in a murder mystery. By Monday - six days after the bodies of Albert Alain Chalem and Maier Lehmann were found in a Colts Neck, N.J., mansion - the subject had become the most popular discussion topic on the SiliconInvestor.com Web site. There were 325 messages posted on the site by midday Monday.

Online toy seller Toysrus.com and Internet media company America Online Inc. said Monday they entered a two-year agreement that prominently places the online toy store in several areas of AOL's shopping sites. (SiliconValley.com)

Consumer Reports Online rates e-commerce sites
Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, officially launched an e-commerce site rating service called e-Ratings (Paid subscription required.). The site was launched together with a cover story in Consumer Reports comparing online shopping to catalogs. The review gave the catalogs an edge for usability. The nonprofit Consumer Reports Online is working with BizRate.com, a Web site evaluation company, as well. In addition to listing Consumer Reports' evaluations, users will be able to see the merchant ranking awarded by BizRate.com. (ZDNet)

eBay knocked out by more tech problems
eBay suffered a 45-minute outage today and more than one hour of downtime Monday, in the latest technical setbacks for the leading online auction site. (NY Times)

Playboy to add auctions
Set to launch December 1, the service will include auctions from both Net users and Playboy itself. The adult entertainment company intends to offer items such as autographed books and limited-edition photographs, the company said in a statement likely to be released tomorrow. (News.com)

eBay, AOL expand auction pact to four AOL sites
Internet auctioneer eBay Inc. and the No. 1 service provider America Online Inc. said Monday that it would jointly branded sites on four AOL sites, the latest in combined efforts by the two companies since December 1997. (SiliconValley.com)
