Four Airlines set joint travel Web site
UAL Corp.'s United Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc., Northwest Airlines Corp. and Continental Airlines Inc. are forming the online service. The airlines plan to open in the first half of 2000 the yet-to-be-named Web site, where travelers will be able to book airline, hotel and rental car accommodations. (SiliconValley.com)

Slate readership, revenues rise
Microsoft's e-zine, Slate.com, has almost quintupled its readership in the eight months since going from a subscription service to a free Web site. Publisher Scott Moore reported audience traffic measurements from Media Metrix (MMXI) showed 1.17 million readers in September, compared to 222,000 in January, the last month Slate.com was a paid service. He also said In the last three months, Slate.com has signed 13 new advertisers for combined revenues of more than $2.5 million. (Tipworld newsletter)

E-Signature Bill Passes House
A bill to set a national standard for making electronic signatures as legal as paper signatures has won approval by the U.S. House of Representatives. But opponents still say it isn't good enough for consumers. (The Industry Standard)

House Passes Domain Names Bill
In a major victory for the Motion Picture Association and other industry groups, the House passed a bill that would outlaw cybersquatting, the practice of speculating in Internet addresses, known as domain names. (NY Times)


Internet Policy Institute
Internet Veterans Form Think Tank
Former Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale and a handful of Internet heavyweights have formed the Internet Policy Institute to examine Internet issues and the Web's impact on society. The new "think tank" will kick off its efforts with a research project on the Internet's economic impact and an initiative designed to educate the presidential candidates on Internet issues.
