Backdoor Password
MS admits planting secret password
Microsoft acknowledged Thursday that its engineers included in some of its Internet software a secret password -- a phrase deriding their rivals at Netscape as "weenies" -- that could be used to gain illicit access to hundreds of thousands of Internet sites worldwide. ZDNet



"Such a backdoor password is absolutely against our policy" Steve Lipner, Manager of Microsoft's security-response center, acknowledging the online-security risk in an interview Thursday.


Security flaw reflects "Microsoft arrogance"
Despite most companies' prohibitions against it, engineers often leave such "calling cards'' on Internet sites and software programs. For example, typing the phrase "more evil than the devil'' into the Web search engine on Netscape's home page produces a link to Microsoft's home page. Kentucky Connect
