Even in the most wired countries Sweden, Canada and the United States one-third of each countrys population isnt online. And in plenty of other well-wired European nations there are holdouts, most notably in France and Italy, where usage hovers around 30 percent. More important, in both countries, 40 percent say the Internet isnt in their future. MSNBC A study by anthropologists looked at wireless device usage among people in nine cities: Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Stockholm, Paris, London, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Their conclusions noted several cultural differences, including: CNN In Stockholm, wireless phone devices become an extension of users' personalities, becoming "totems." In Paris, users are more concerned about how the phone looks than the underlying technology and what the phone can do. In London, shy users are adopting SMS and e-mail to overcome their shyness and reach out to others.
