Google
Google lets websites bid for higher rankings on searches
Google is introducing a new program that allows websites to be displayed more prominently by paying more money. Under a new feature scheduled to launch on Tuesday night, the rankings of a search engine devoted to advertisers will be determined in part by how much websites offer to be listed in specific categories. The system lets websites raise their bids to increase their chances for higher placement on the section of Google's site that is devoted to sponsored links. (Ananova)

Not All Asian E-Mail Is Spam
E-mail from China, Korea and Taiwan contains a great deal of spam, so much so systems administrators are blocking all posts from their systems. That means some legitimate messages aren't being delivered, too.

Afghanistan
Afghanistan joins mobile age
Afghanistan is joining the mobile phone revolution, even though the war-ravaged country has almost no telephones and barely a notion of computers, let alone the internet. The Afghan Wireless Communications Company has started to install a mobile phone system in the capital, Kabul. It expects to make the first test calls in the next couple of weeks and have an international calls available by the end of March. (BBC)

Fury over auction of twin towers attack recordings
The sale of World Trade Centre memorabilia on the internet, including recordings of emergency service transmissions, is sparking outrage. Online auction site eBay has hundreds of items on sale from the towers, from tickets to the twin towers' observation deck to dusty boots from a rescue worker. But outrage has been sparked by compact discs up for auction which claim to contain recordings of police and fire radio transmissions from the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. The anonymous seller of the CDs says on the website "relive this horrific day in history". Other memorabilia on sale includes a copy of an old version of Microsoft's Flight Simulator programme which allows players to fly into the twin towers, and a "genuine office key". (Ananova)
