DOJ vs Microsoft
States aim for tough Microsoft sanctions
Nine states urge a federal judge to impose stiff antitrust sanctions against Microsoft, saying the software giant is still using its monopoly power to bully potential competitors. On the first day of hearings into possible remedies in the antitrust case against Microsoft, the nine states said a proposed settlement with the U.S. Justice Department and nine other states is too weak to stop the company from using its monopoly power in technologies that have arisen since the case began nearly four years ago. States accused of trying to 'destroy' Microsoft
Microsoft warned of a Doomsday scenario in which the company would be forced to withdraw Windows, its personal computer operating system with more than 90 per cent market share, if remedy proposals by nine litigating US states were adopted.  (FT)

States cite e-mail in bid to punish Microsoft more
State prosecutors have obtained evidence they believe raises questions about the Justice Department's motivation for settling the Microsoft antitrust case. E-mail, Web at work -- is the free lunch over?
Brace yourselves, corporate drones: one of the last bastions of work place relief -- sneaking in some online shopping or snickering over an e-mail joke -- could be destined for universal banishment. Major corporations are increasingly classifying employee e-mail and Internet privileges as potential security hazards, distractions or worse, costly legal dangers in the making.
As a result, companies are considering dramatically curtailing, or even abolishing completely the freedoms, on which employees have grown increasingly reliant over the past few years. (CNN)

ICANN Director Sues ICANN Over Financial Records
Karl Auerbach, one of 19 directors of the organization that manages the Internet's addressing system, today sued the group in a bid to gain unrestricted access to its financial records. A longtime critic of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Auerbach was elected in 2000 by North American Internet users to serve as their representative within ICANN. Since that time, Auerbach says he has been trying - to no avail - to obtain copies of the group's financial records. (Washtech.com)

US Military Scours Windows Systems For Hacker Back Doors
The United States Army and Navy are conducting a high-priority security review of their Microsoft Windows systems for the presence of an unauthorized remote-control program, sources familiar with the investigation have confirmed. An unclassified memo, sent Mar. 6 by the Navy's Computer Incident Response Team (NAVCIRT), warned Navy computer administrators to scan their Windows systems for evidence of a popular commercial software program called RemotelyAnywhere.  (Newsbytes)

Canal Plus vs Ruport Murdoch
Murdoch lawyer to fight hacking claim
Rupert Murdoch has called in his most senior legal adviser to fight a $1bn court claim that a subsidiary of his News Corporation helped hackers spread across the internet secrets about the technology used by his pay TV rivals. In a move that underlines how seriously both sides are taking the dispute, the French secret service's industrial espionage team has launched its own investigation into the allegations.  (The Guardian)
