Attack On Internet Called Largest Ever
The heart of the Internet sustained its largest and most sophisticated attack ever, starting late Monday, according to officials at key online backbone organizations. Washington Post

Powerful attack cripples Net’s core
An unusually powerful electronic attack briefly crippled 9 of the 13 computer servers that manage global Internet traffic this week, officials disclosed Tuesday. But most Internet users didn’t notice because the attack only lasted one hour. The FBI and White House were investigating. MSNBC

Servers Bounce Back From E-Attack
[...] In August 2000, 4 of the 13 root servers failed for a brief period because of a technical glitch. A more serious problem involving root servers occurred in July 1997 after experts transferred a garbled directory list to seven root servers and failed to correct the problem for four hours. Web vandalism is on the rise around the world. In the past two weeks, Zone-H.org proprietor Roberto Preatoni said defacements have increased to more than 500 separate attacks a day and more than 1,500 over weekends.

A year ago, he said, his site got around
30 to 50 defacement notices a day from hackers. (Internet News — October 22)
