À en croire les derniers chiffres du capital-risque américain, la bulle Internet et ses effets auraient été absorbés. Sur l'année 2002, les capital-risqueurs auront investi 21,2 milliards de dollars, soit approximativement le niveau d'investissement de « l'avant-bulle » (21,6 milliards de dollars en 1998). (01net)

Paris s'illuminera de messages d'internautes pour la Saint-Valentin
La Mairie de Paris lance cette année un nouvel événement: des messages d'amour d'internautes seront affichés sur des panneaux lumineux de la capitale française le jour de la Saint-Valentin. Les internautes parisiens peuvent soumettre leur message (sept lignes de 18 caractères, voir exemples dans cette page) à compter d'aujourd'hui et jusqu'au 10 février à minuit, heure de Paris. Sex.com case heralds end of Internet - NSI
Network Solutions - the Internet's biggest domain name registrar and the owner of the .com domain - has heralded the end of the Internet in court filings to the Californian Supreme Court. It warns that if a forthcoming decision by the court goes the wrong way it "would cripple the Internet and jeopardize the national economic benefit for e-commerce". It would also "threaten all Internet registrars' survival". The issue of whether NSI can be held accountable remains outstanding however. If it loses, it faces a $100 million claim. Not underestimating its own importance, this claim would put the entire Internet at risk, the NSI says. (The Register)

AOL reports first drop in subscribers
After a relentless decade-long climb to more than 35 million global subscribers, the number of America Online users has slipped for the first time. Tucked in among the more dramatic announcements in its earnings release last week, the online division of AOL Time Warner reported the departure of 170,000 U.S. users in the fourth quarter -- despite the splashy release of its latest software, version 8.0. Internet allows access to Columbia photos
The Internet is serving as a nexus and bulletin board for Columbia shuttle disaster information as the public shares digital photos and eyewitness accounts with NASA and news organizations. NASA established an e-mail address at columbiaimages@nasa.gov for people to submit images and text. The space agency also made provisions for people to send photos and video using a more complex procedure called file transfer protocol. (Nando Times)
