ID tags to track Net music sales
A music industry trade body launched on Monday electronic identity tags to keep tabs on Internet music sales in a bid to compensate musicians and song writers as more of their works become available online. The Global Release Identifier, or GRid, is a code akin to the Universal Product Code (UPC) bar code found on a CD or cassette tape in stores. (CNN)

A new sport: Hacking Kevin Mitnick
Mitnick Amused By Website Hacks
The world's best-known computer hacker suffered the indignity of having someone break into his new security consulting company's website. But Kevin Mitnick shrugged it off as "quite amusing," not serious enough for him to call the FBI.

A hacker calling himself "BugBear" added one page to Mitnick's corporate website on Jan. 30 with a message, "Welcome back to freedom, Mr. Kevin," and added that "it was fun and easy to break into your box." He included a photograph of a polar bear with two cubs. Another similar break-in occurred Sunday by a hacker in Texas who asked Mitnick to hire him as the company's security officer. (Wired)

Cyberspace
Increasingly angry messages fill missing-woman Web site
The guest book at lacipeterson.com started out so sweet, with messages of sympathy and prayers for the safe return of the missing Modesto woman pouring in from around the world. The 27-year-old woman with the deep dimples and shiny dark hair was eight months pregnant when she disappeared Christmas Eve, and thousands of people felt drawn to reach out to her husband, Scott, and her family as the story quickly made national and international news.

Today, the day Laci Peterson was due to give birth to her son, she is still missing, and there are more than 40,000 entries in the guest book. But they have taken a dark, angry turn.

Hundreds of people have signed on to accuse Scott Peterson of Laci's murder, hundreds more to call him a lying adulterer and demand that he cooperate with police. (MercuryNews.com)
