[ Star Speakers at TELECOM 99 ]

Bill Gates [ Excerpts ]
"Anytime, Anyplace on Any Device"
Microsoft Chairmain and CEO Bill Gate's keynote speech this morning in the Arena theater at TELECOM99 outlined Microsoft's new vision and new direction. From a "PC in every home, on every desktop" to "Anytime, Anyplace on Any Device". And in order to make this happen, Bill Gates reaffirmed Microsoft's committment in forging strong partnerships with Telecoms.

Larry Ellison [ Excerpts ]
"The PC is a ridiculous device and Microsoft is making it more complicated."
High entertainement this morning with Oracle Chairman and CEO, Larry Ellison who's opening statement was a stab at Microsoft. "Four years ago I said the PC is a ridiculous device - not to pick on anybody in particular - a very complicated device. Microsoft is making it more complicated. "Windows 2000 is the most complicated engineering project in the history of mankind" - you can actually read this statement on their website. That's quite a statement when you consider the harnessing of nuclear energy, sending a man to the moon... Do you want that on your desktop?

From the Floor...
Telia Networks Services
On the ground floor of the Telia stand, the World Café Plaza offers visitors information and basic communications services as well as refreshments. Would you like a drink? Just ask the Telia staff member holding a WAP phone and she will order your drink. Your order appears on a screen above the bar with a number and lets you know when your drink is ready. Cool.

Alcatel's
stand, the largest at this year's Telecom, is rumored to have cost 40 million dollars.

The buzz
Handling ennemies. Her Excellency Ms Seiko Noda, Honorouble Member House of Representatives of Japan, who delivered a speech on Japanese Telecoms, following Bill Gates keynote address and before Larry Ellison's, thus allowed Bill Gates time to leave Arena - the amphitheater where the Interactive summit took place -, and Larry Ellison to arrive, without encurring the risk of running into each other.

Alcatel's
stand, the largest at this year's Telecom, is rumored to have cost 40 million dollars.

The Facts
In one area of the Swisscom stand, three 8x16 m wooden panels are filled with 35 000 white roses. They must be changed every 3 days. It takes 40 people all night long to replace the wilted flower with fresh ones. Publicity manager Jacques Bettex says this conveys the message that Swisscom customers are more important than technology.

From ITU: The Telecom 99 Daily
BT : "you don't need to be here!"
British telecom reputedly pulled out of TELECOM 99 because of the costs involved in a Telecom show where exhibitors showcase technologies that make it decidedly unnecessary to go to trade shows at all. Apparently, they considered having someone with a megaphone on it's empty floor space announce: YOU DON'T NEED TO BE HERE!" (excepts from Peter Heywood's editorial today in the Telecom 99 Daily)

Phoning from the restroom...
Using cell phones is so second nature to show attendess that the restrooms around Palexpo have become makeshift communications centers for attendees. Hands-free use of the devices is readily evident...

Crédit Suisse
Crédit Suisse is banking on Swisscom AG to help it bring financial services to WAP users by early next year. It claims it will be the first Swiss bank to let customers check accounts or buy stocks (www.youtrade.com) by mobile phone.

Hello?
While would-be Telecom attendees may be trapped in gridlock traffic for at least two hours, at least they can complain to colleagues over their cell phones as connections are going through over what Swisscom AG has called one of the densest areas of cellular coverage on Earth. The company has spent more than $ 1.3 million on equipment with allows for more than 20 000 simultaneous calls,

High Tech Fashion
High tech meets couture twice a day at the Sirti stand, where runway models are draped in Armani and Fendi.

The Russian Pavilion
The big draw at the Russian Pavilion - besides the products, of course - is a virtual arm-wrestling game that lets participants test their prowess against an onscreen puppet.

Telekom Austria
If you're in the mood for Strauss but don't have time to visit downtown's Victoria Hall while in Geneva, TELEKOM Austria has just what you need. K&K String Quartet from Austria is performing every two hours at the Telekom Austria booth.

Bejmain Netanyahu
Kofi Annan isn't the only global notable stepping to the podium this week. Former Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to speak Wednesday on "Knowledge and Internet-Based Economy as Key Factors for Growth" in the 21 st Century.

Security is the Missing Link at Telecom99
Out of the 1000 exhibitors, exactly one lists itself in the show directory under the category of security products for telecom networks. The company is Microlink from Tel Aviv.

Spare a dime?
A new service from Sonera lets users buy products from vending machines by dialing select phone numbers from their GSM phones. It's currently in operation in Finland, where users can already buzz sodas, get their cars washed and play music off a jukebox.

Celebs and Performances
Nortel Networks flew in Diana Ross from Los Angeles Tuesday night with 10 musicians to perform at the Grand Casino Theater at the Noga Hilton Hotel. The concert was followed by fireworks over Lake Geneva.

Opera Wednesday night at Geneva's Victoria Hall, courtesy of Telecom Italia.

The Industrial Services of Geneva have been laser beaming a welcome message to all of TELECOM participants in Geneva's famous 140 meter high water fountain.

Your attention please... show stoppers, contests, quizz
Terry Matthews, Chairman of Newbridge Networks Coporation is a big rugby fan, and the sponsor of the Canadian rugby team. At the Newbridge Stand, several times a day, members of the ALL BLACKS team from New Zealand give a Haka demonstration. A perfect tie-in with the rugby world championship going on at the same time as TELECOM 99.

Two American dressed Indians, send smoke signals from their fireside at the CMG booth in Pavillion 3. CMG is a WAP supplier. So, wireless communication is really nothing new ...

It really is a circus at TELECOM99. Samsung offers several shows a day with gymnastics and dancers. Spotted elsewhere on the floor, a mime group and a comedian.

At the Sun stand, a 30 minute presentation on the hour every hour singles out by a roaming and random spotlight, 4 lucky people in the audience who get to take home a Palm Pilot V.

Compaq's "I am unstoppable campaign". Pick up a green tag with a red cord and check it's lottery number, sign up online and you may win a a trip to a Sting World concert, tickets to a concert or a Sting CD. Don't give up if it's not the winning number, because if you wear your tag around your neck all week, you might be sighted by a Compaq crew member and win a prize anyway.

Quizz. Are you a Telecom Titan? you can find out by stepping up to any TIK on the Telecom 99 show floor and take the TQ test. Answer three questions correctly and you're in the running for a Compaq Aero PDA.

Alot of Hot Air
CBLWorldkey.com and The Financial Times are advertized on two different hot air ballons right outside of Palexpo.
